Question by Charles S: Is it worth getting a recirculating range hood?
I understand from browsing a few sites on the web that range hoods that are not connected to an outside vent are not recommended. However, I live in a rental apartment and I am not allowed to have an outside vent installed (nor do I wish to pay for one, considering I can’t take it with me when I move). So I am thinking about getting a recirculating range hood, which would direct the grease to a carbon filter. Is this type of hood better than nothing, or should I just not even bother at all?

Our microwave / vent hood wasn’t vented to the outside when we bought our house. The carbon filter didn’t do squat. the smells were just same as if we weren’t using a fan. In the summer it blew the heat from the stove further away in to the other room , the air conditioner never shut off. We had to buy a new carbon filter just about every other month. They got loaded with grease and you can’t wash them. It was two years before I connected the vent through the wall. Now no smells, no extreme heat in the summer, and it bypasses the carbon filter, so we don’t have to replace it.
