Fridge Freezers What are your choices?

LG, Samsung, Hotpoint or Smeg? Side by side, bottom freezer or top freezer? Full standing freezer, or under counter? Stainless steel, silver, black, blue, red or white? Energy rating A, of course! And what capacity?

As you can see there are a few things to consider when buying a new fridge freezer, most of them arenon-technical and self explanitory. Probably the best advice is to think about how much space you have in your kitchen, utility room, or perhaps outbuilding or garage if you have that space available.

Think about how much food you need to store in your fridge freezer. If you can find the space for an american style fridge freezer or chest freezer, these can obviously be beneficial for families when it comes to storing larger amounts of frozen food. Ultimately only you know how much fresh food you and your family buys and how much of your food is frozen.

Check out the dimensions of your existing fridge freezer and if you’re simply replacing like for like I would suggest keeping things simple and buy a very similar fridge freezer in size, style and design etc, perhaps even the same make. Could you save space by installing a fridge freezer in one unit; where the fridge unit sits on top of the freezer unit? Or do you opt for side by side, individual fridge and freezer units.

Most white goods today can be easily fully integrated to fit inside existing kitchen cuboards or specifically designed units which house full height fridge freezers so that they are completely hidden behind your kitchen cuboard doors.

Lastly energy efficiency should also be considered. As with all white goods in the UK fridge freezers are rated from energy efficiency A to G, with A being most afficient and G being least efficient.

Some fridge freezers offer additional functionality that is great, such as Frost-Free freezing where the freezer is designed to ensure food is not covered in large chuncks of ice or frost. Also an automatic defrost function can help reduce frosting because it regulates the temperature of your fridge freezer.

Question by Tomas: Are the metal lids on Ball mason jars good for freezers?
I plan to store whole grains (buckwheet, amaranth, quinua) in Ball glass jars with the metal lids/bands on them. There is no heating/cooking, the jars are just filled with grains and the lids are screwed.

Are the lids (incl. rubber rings on them) and bands that come with the jars good enough for freezers? They seem to be rust-proof. But still freezers have high humidity. Will the lids stay firmly screwed?

Yes, they will do fine. I also store buckwheat, quinoa, and oat groats (I buy them in bulk). I grind some of them into flour, and store that in the jars as well. I have a spare freezer that is full of nothing but the jars, and I have never had any issues with them. If you want some recipes for those grains (including baked goods from the flours), email me-I would be happy to share.
